Our Mediators
All of our mediators are trained to the highest standard, usually with National Family Mediation (NFM). They are approved by the Family Mediation Council, and have been assessed by the Legal Services Commission to provide publicly funded (Legal Aid) mediation. They come from a variety of backgrounds including legal, social work, education, and business.
Our mediators are among the most experienced in the country, and benefit from regular updating and training to ensure that the mediation they offer is the best that is available.
Mediators give each of you the chance to be heard and have your views taken into account. They focus on you and your needs and work with you together to create the best solution taking account of all your circumstances.

After a varied career which commenced in the legal profession in the 1970s, Peter qualified as a mediator whilst working with a mediation service in Cornwall. Following a move of home to the New Forest, Peter joined Hampshire Family Mediation at the end of 2006. Peter is married and has two sons and three grandchildren. Peter believes very firmly that couples who are separating and facing issues, whether financial or involving the care and parenting of their children, should be offered the choice of seeking a solution to those issues through the mediation process rather than becoming involved in contested court proceedings.

Prior to training in mediation, Liz spent several years working as a generic social worker both in Scotland and East Anglia. She trained as a mediator in 2002 with NFM and initially worked for a private mediation service in the north of Hampshire. She joined Hampshire Family Mediation in 2004 and works as a mediator in Basingstoke. Liz completed her training to conduct Child Consultation in 2003. She also delivers court ordered Parenting Classes for Separated Parents in Guildford for Surrey Mediation.

Kay did her training as mediator with National Family Mediation and completed her training in 2003. She has practised full time as a mediator since then and mediates around 100 cases each year, usually in Portsmouth (Cosham). Kay qualified as a Professional Practice Consultant in 2009 and works alongside her colleague in providing this service to HFM. Kay has a background in education, including as a home educator, counselling and voluntary sector management. In her mediation practice Kay is particularly interested in parenting, blended families and unmarried couples.

Tanja Dodd completed her mediation training with National Family Mediation in 2004 and is a Legal Services Commission recognised family mediator. Previously she had worked abroad for a number of years in organisational development and (workplace) conflict resolution. Her theoretical background is in psychology - she has a B.A. (Hons) and a Masters degree in Organisational Psychology. Tanja has experience of neighbourhood disputes and consulting with children as well as her experience in family mediation. She currently consults children for Hampshire Family Mediation and the Child Contact Centre in Salisbury.

Peter Ford was a founder member of the organisation that became Hampshire Family Mediation, and has more than 25 years' experience as a mediator. Before this he worked for a period at Southampton County Court. Peter assists couples with resolving financial matters when they separate. Like his colleagues, when he mediates with parents he seeks whenever possible to encourage them to work together for the future wellbeing of their children.

Irene Jackson has a background in social work, and worked as a qualified Social Worker with children and families before retraining and qualifying as a family mediator in 2006. Irene has been working as a full time mediator since she qualified. Irene has a wealth of experience in child only cases, property and financial cases and all issues cases. In addition to her mediation work Irene delivers parenting courses for separating couples.

Theresa has worked at Hampshire Family Mediation since qualifying as a mediator. She recently completed the training in child consultation as recognises the value of this aspect of mediation practice. Before training as a family mediator, Theresa's background was providing and developing advocacy services in Hampshire, specialising in mental health advocacy. She now trains advocates across the country in the new advocacy qualification. Theresa decided to work in family mediation as a number of her advocacy skills were transferable and her own experiences could give her a greater understanding of the difficulties facing separating families and empathy to encourage them to find a workable solution. Theresa is keenly aware of the many benefits of using mediation: benefits to the clients, the children involved and the wider and sometimes complicated family circles.

Jan Medway trained as a mediator in 2001after a career in teaching. She has experience in finance and administration and running small businesses, and has carried out social research for public and voluntary sector organisations. She is interested in family relationships and child development.

Maggie mediates on Children, Finance & Property and All Issues mediation. She completed her training in child consultation in January 2010, and is keen to integrate this into her mediation practice. She mediates in Cosham and in Winchester. She is married with two children.

Jayne finished her mediation training in July 2005. She is a qualified accountant and counsellor, and brings both these skills into the mediation setting. Jayne previously worked as accountant and senior business analyst for an investment bank in London for 14 years before taking a career change. She previously worked for a mediation service in Surrey and now practises as a mediator in Family Mediation in Sussex (Brighton) as well as at Hampshire Family Mediation.

Margaret Pendlebury has been a mediator since 1992, and a Professional Practice Consultant since 1999. Before training as a mediator, her background was as a children and families social worker. Margaret now works full-time in family mediation, as a practitioner, trainer and practice consultant to several mediation services. She is skilled in helping separating couples negotiate financial issues, whilst maintaining a focus on the well-being of the children concerned. Margaret supervises the team of mediators at HFMS, being responsible for training and practice standards. At a national level, Margaret was chair of the Professional Practice Committee of National Family Mediation, and is committed to developing the highest standards of mediation practice.
