How Appointments Are Arranged
Wherever you are in the county, the mediation process itself is the same. What changes is how and where you attend.
In person
In-person appointments are held at a suitable venue, arranged with you when you enquire. If you and the other person should not be in the same room, shuttle mediation allows you both to attend while remaining in separate rooms throughout.
Online
Online appointments are held by video call and follow the same professional standards as in-person sessions. They are often the practical choice where travel, work patterns, childcare or distance make attending in person difficult — and they mean each person can join from wherever they are based.
Whether an appointment is held in person or online is discussed with you at the enquiry stage, alongside the assessment of whether mediation is suitable for your circumstances.

Not sure where to start
A MIAM is a private, individual appointment where you can ask questions and find out whether mediation is suitable. In many family court matters it is required before you can apply to court.
Arrangements for children

When being in the same room is too difficult
Shuttle mediation keeps both people in separate rooms or separate online spaces, with the mediator moving between them.
Help with the cost
Legal aid may be available if you meet the financial eligibility criteria, and the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme may contribute towards eligible cases. Eligibility is assessed individually.
